Marcel Marceau
Marceau performing as Bip the ClownMarcel Marceau was an internationally known
French actor and mime artist. He is well known for his persona Bip the clown, for which he wore a striped pullover and a battered top hat with a flower sticking out of the top.
Marcel was born in Strasbourg, France, on the 22 March 1923, to a Jewish family He survived WWII, saving many children in the process. He started miming as a way to keep the children quiet while they were being smuggled to safety. In 1946 Marcel first created Bip the Clown, and first performed at Theatre de Poche, in Paris.
There were many things that made Marcel the great mime artist he was. One of them is the fact that he was just very good at what he did, but there was also a lot of work that he put in to become great, as well as lots of technique. Marcel was really good at using facial expressions and body language. He was also great at making the audience really see the imaginary prop he was using. He did this by making sure it was exactly in the same place at all times, knowing the size/weight/shape of the object, and just picturing it in his head. Marcel was also a very creative person, which would have helped him come up with his alter-ego, Bip the Clown. All of these were just small parts of Marcel's mime career, but they are all important skills he needed to have to make him the great mime artist he was.
